1st Webinar: Adapting to Climate Change in Rural Communities On 9th July 2024, the first webinar of the SURF project titled “Pathways to Resilience: Adapting to Climate Change in Rural Communities” was held. During the webinar, various key themes were explored, such as the need for climate change adaptation in rural areas and shared success stories from Spain. The event offered valuable insights into how rural communities can effectively adapt and thrive in the face of these pressing challenges.

Climate Change Handbook for Rural Areas
This guide is an integral part of the SURF project aimed at increasing opportunities for rural areas amidst the green transition and climate change
adaptation. This guide serves as the introductory framework for the entire project, functioning as a handbook that will be gradually expanded throughout
the project’s duration and beyond its conclusion.
It aims to lay the groundwork for developing the project and facilitate the effective adaptation of territories to climate change using practical tools. By understanding climate change adaptation, individuals and organizations can better prepare for future challenges, protect vulnerable populations, and contribute to a more sustainable rural future.

Local Workshops
Three local workshops will be held in the areas studied (Italy, Slovenia and Spain) , with participation of local specialists, adult educators, the rural community, and other stakeholders related to rural areas. This will allow community members to come together and share their perspectives and experiences with local issues related to climate change.
The three workshops will focus on identifying local risks, and will include participants from rural communities, particularly technicians and professionals involved in local development
FIRST LOCAL WORKSHOPS
The project partners held 4 local workshops (2 in Italy, 1 in Slovenia and 1 in Spain) aimed at improving the knowledge about climate change adaptation and understanding how to identify local risks, vulnerabilities and challenges in rural areas, and how to point out opportunities and solutions to implement effective adaptation strategies.
They included a variety of participants from rural communities, specifically entrepreneurs and professionals involved in local development and environmental/farming field, members of local associations (environmental, territorial development, eco-tourism, Slow food), university researches and students, youth workers and public administrators.
The different backgrounds of the participants allowed community members to come together and share their perspectives and experiences with local issues related to climate change, identifying risks, vulnerabilities and consequences. The workshops process helped highlight opportunities and solutions to develop and implement effective adaptation strategies.
